The recent availability of "Balloon Time"
disposable Helium tanks has provided a low-cost inert gas suitable for occasional use in
euthanasia of pest animals, cats and small dogs. This product delivers 300 litres of Helium (or 420 litres from the larger size) through a "tilt nozzle" which is easily removed. A simple check of
cylinder condition is by measuring flow displacing water in a submerged bottle. See
YouTube "Doing It With John" for a demonstration. |
|
| Moggy Farewell attaches to the
tank, in place of the "tilt nozzle". It provides flow-control to reduce the rate of Helium to around twenty litres per minute, giving approximately twenty minutes flow through the flexible tube. Ensure gas seal by wrapping a short length of the pink Teflon tape (included) onto the tank thread. Use a spanner to tighten moderately. |

Domestic users please note:- Laws relating to practice of veterinary science and to protect animals prohibit unqualified persons from euthanasing their animals, other than in exceptional circumstances. |
|
| Use an enclosure just large enough to fit the animal.
The smaller the enclosure, the more rapid is unconsciousness. This illustration is an upside-down fish tank. Maximum suggested size is thirty litres. Tape the plastic tube inside the enclosure, place it over the animal, and turn on the gas. Be prepared to hold down the enclosure so the animal does not escape. Unconsciousness occurs in a couple of minutes. Turn off the gas, and use cloth around the edges of the enclosure to avoid entry of air. Wait half an hour before removing the animal from the enclosure. |
